KioSK 2011
Festival of Slovak independent theatre and dance
Thursday – Saturday, July 28-30, 2011

Peter Šavel, Stano DobákKioSK is a festival for daring spectator. KioSK is a showcase festival of selected contemporary productions from the Slovak independent theatre and dance scene. KioSK’s program addresses a demanding spectator, and is linked with summer atmosphere, informal meetings, creative workshops, garden parties, film projections, interactive performances, bike ride to urban legends and/or camping. One of the favourites – Gastro-kiosk by Šrámek sisters included.

Non-traditional scenic forms
KioSK 2011 once again takes a „demanding spectator“ to see non-traditional scenic compositions, and apart from text-based theatre and contemporary dance performances, it will present a sonic map of place and town, documentary theatre, performance-installation, site-specific, physical theatre, plays on the verge of improvisation and script, and performance of various genres. Among this year’s novelties belong improvised evenings by artists, who will present their improvisation and performance talents in communication with spectator, music and/or space.

Morning discussion forums
The fourth edition of festival will also host creative and analytic reflection on festival productions. KioSK opens in the morning, with discussion forums dedicated to performances of the previous day. Apart from creators, dancer Jaro Viňarský (SK) and light designers Jan Baneš (CZ) and Patrik Sedlák (SK) will discuss the performaces focusing on two aspects – physicality in theatre and working with light and scene.

inhabiting the space
KioSK performances will be enriched with physical commentary called „inhabiting the space“ including an exclusive interview with creators. Dancers (Zuzana Burianová, Matthew Rogers, Jaro Viňarský) will prolong the actual duration of selected performances, and, improvising, enter the changed, re-created
theatrical or non-theatrical space, left with energy, atmosphere, feeling, memory, things and maybe actors – dancers – performers.
With their body language, they will try to catch a smell of the altered space perspective, inhabit the space and reaffirm the value of specific being-ness on stage, and significance of theatrical act in the play, performance, scenic composition. The physical commentaries will be followed by a short interview with creators. Interviewer Jaro Viňarský.

Special Award
For the first time in the festival, The Light KioSK Award 2011 will be awarded for an outstanding light and scenic performance. The purpose of the award is to attract attention of laymen as well as professionals in the field, initiate public discussion on light design and raise awareness of educational and professional aspect of light design as an important element of theatre work.

Theatre Camp
KioSK is also a summer theatre camp. In the garden by Stanica, you can camp for free, showers and toilets available. Just bring your tent, sleeping bags, mattresses for morning pilates exercises and enjoy the festival at your best!

Note: Looking for daring spectator. Offering adventure of collective quest for „an/other“ theatre. Offering our perspective. Can’t wait for yours.

5pm, S1 | theme event
Urban Legends 3: The Mythology of post-industrial space
Petr Janeček: Urban legendsCity legends – not only in Žilina, not only in ethnologist’s perspective. Presentation enriched with image and audiovisual projection focuses on the topic of so-called urban legends and myths (contemporary tales), rumours and alike narratives which are typical for contemporary globalized society. Prague ethnologist and folklorist Peter Janeček will focus on the stories collected in Žilina and vicinity today – stories typical for culture of local children, adolescents and students, modern legends associated with particular buildings in the town or places and warnings spread not only by word but also the internet.

These stories, which represent an integral part of the local genius loci and symbolic message about the particular space, will be commented on the basis of their analogies and associated stories collected from all over the world, as well as on the basis of possible interpretations from ethnological, sociological and psychological point of view. Contemporary urban legends can be seen as a reflection of wishes, fears, worries and anxieties of contemporary society, as an unconscious reaction to political, economical, social and cultural changes and problems, and last but not least, as a modern equivalent of archaic myths, legends and tales.

Tomáš Danielis: Smetiar
Tomáš DanielisSolo performance which is on the edge of performance and installation. Slovak dancer Tomas Danielis is interested in concept of performance which includes dance, movement and simple action also with objects. Main motivation to create this solo was playing with the different possibilities of point of view, as well as playing with potential and limits of eye and camera. Smetiar is experiment whether physical action of the artist and interaction with objects creates representation thus kind of dramaturgical build up or creates succession of pictures free to perceive for each spectator without me as creator interfering on any level.

Lucia Kašiarová: ALA IIIalternative lobbing art
absence love for art
aggressive live art

A solo sketch treating on the issue of the artist and their being on stage balances on the borderline between real and theatre action. What we get is a changing surreal image – one that results from merge of well planned action and a suden inspiration.

9pm, S2 | dance improvisation in dialogue with audience
Peter Šavel, Stano Dobák: Much to much or “Once you go US, you can’t go back”
P. Šavel, S. Dobák:Much to much After a successful debut „One for you, two for me“, which shined at last year’s KioSK, two ex-classmates from prestigious school P.A.R.T.S in Brussels are back on stage again. The new project explores several topics associated with the issue of conflict between the commercial and the artistic. Authors created a long list of ideas with common theme: When does “much” turn into “too much”? How does “too much” become “just the right amount”? At which point does pathos turn into a real emotion and vice versa? How can the artificial become the real again?

These floating, strong audio-visual and physical images are being performed during an uninterrupted dialogue with spectator. The world which the two young performers manifest by their physical presence and honesty may seem mad and playful at first sight yet there is certainly more to it than superficiality. Definitely an entertaining and sensitive performance, full of emotions and references to everyday joys and troubles.
Performance was created thanks to support of Passerelle VZW (Kortrijk - Belgium).

4pm, S2 | documentary theatre
Ján Šimko: The Last Historical Mission of Young Generation
Ján Šimko: Posledná historická úloha mladej generácieWhat would happen when you hear at some party that somebody had been beaten up in Prague and that the revolution started? Clear, perestroyka had been in progress for four years already, the regimes in Europe were falling one after another, the Berlin Wall was taken apart by the first tourists and there was something in the air in the Czechoslovakia too. But this is politics and life is something totally different. The stories of students who were able to keep their places on the brink in those tense times.

The performance talks about the Velvet revolution in 1989 which was led by students and actors from a view of its participants. About naivety and ideals and their state after 20 years. About the theatre of revolution and the important role of actors in it. About students and actors in 2009 and about the questionable possibility of another revolution.

The playscript is based on the documentary material - interviews with participants of the revolution who were students at those times and their present day contemporaries. It investigates the stories of people whose natural need for a youth revolt was transformed into a revolution and their protest helped the fall of totalitarian regime by a lucky coincidence.

6pm, S1 | physical essence of drama text
Viera Dubačová, Jaro Viňarský: Helver and the Others
V. Dubačová, J. Viňarský: Helver a tí ostatní Theatre project which is neither a text-based nor dance performance. This form emerged during rehearsals out of an original theatrical expression: its major attribute is a strictly defined space, which determines the actions of actor and dancer. Space with uncompromising rules transposed into physical expression. The body thrown into an extreme physical tension. The totality of acting in cruel circumstances laid down by the environment. Once you feel that a deep release is up the bend, there is no way to help the body avoid it.

The performance is inspired by a play by Ingmar Villquist Helver’s Night, in which creators looked for an essence, feeeling, sensation, strong message and topicality. Words disappeared, sound remained. It changed into a space and silent presence on stage. Helver, the man on the margins, overlooked, useless, other, unacceptable – the man to be rid of.
Concept, directed and performed by: Viera Dubačová, Jaro Viňarský

ME-SA / Debris Company: between a rock and a hard place
ME-SA & Debris Company: between a rock and a hard placeAmbivalence. Antagonism. Dilemma. Mass and spirit, jump and fall, light and dark – everything in one spot, in one person, in one room, for which nobody has the key.
If we talk about something that is happening somewhere deep beneath our skin, in our soul, in the right centre of us, in the middle of an ongoing private storm, can we take a piece of glass instead of a scalpel and penetrate with a gentle cut deeper?

Dance composition which stands for a heavy topic, pure, impressive dance and physical exertion. „Two contemporary female dancers are getting closer to each other as well as within themselves through embraces, conflicts, betrayals, games and rotations, in a shared space of dance and the dark, attacked by drops excavating the stone of their bodies and souls. Contemporary dance teaches both the women sisterhood.“ (Nina Vangeli).

Independent dance company resides in Prague. It was founded thanks to previous copperation between choreographer Ji-Eun-Lee and Czecho-Slovak trio of female dancers Hana Kalousková, Martina Lacová and Karolína Párová. Dance composition Between a rock and a hard place was made in cooperation with the Slovak Debris Company.
