ShiftsThe new performance of Peter Šavel and Kamil Mihalov, duet of dancer and pianist. Emotional physical interpretation of grief and sorrow in the interaction of the music of J. S. Bach, Goldberg variations.

Dance and choreography: Peter Šavel
Music interpretation: Kamil Mihalov
Music: Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg variations (selection); Uri Caine Ensemble / Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations (2000)

I feel too much. That’s what’s going on. Do you think one can feel too much? Or just feel in the wrong ways? My insides don’t match up with my outsides. Do anyone’s insides and outsides match up? I don’t know. I’m only me. Maybe that’s what a person’s personality is: the difference between the inside and outside. But it’s worse for me. I wonder if everyone thinks it’s worse for him. Probably. But it really is worse for me. Really!
9 year old Oscar from the book of J. S. Foer: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

This motion performance is based on the interest to overcome the formal approaches to the dance. It is relying on the somatic theory of the origins of the emotions. it is developed from the theory of James-Lange, which says that an emotion is a summary of perceptions, induced by physiological response derived from just survived stimuli. Emotion is thus a sensitive sensory response to the physical condition of the body (for example, first I cry, and then I start to feel sadness).

In this sense the author is processing and shaping the physical aspects of the emotions of grief and sorrow. He is translating them into strong interaction with live-sounding music, in this way creating an artistic body language. He is looking not only for the expressive forms of dance, but also their impact on the physical and emotional condition of the dancer.

With each variation dance produces fully perceptual sensation, leaving or calling the emotion. And this one it changes with the every next variation. Suddenly, but steadily. What happens to the dancer’s conscious physical decision-making and emotional state of mind during these changes? What dance!
