KioSK 2012: Light design from concept to realization

workshop svetelný dizajnThe topic itself reveals a lot. During this intensive five-day workshop, we´ll examine how a performance design is being cooked. We will focus on work procedure, from first contact with choreographer, or director, through selection of suitable light sources, substantiation of light concept, designing atmospheres for particular scenes, to technical documentation. Workshop participants will pass all the steps, necessary in light concept making process. They will learn, how communication in theatre is important and will find more about Netherlands´ light designing.

We´ll eat all, we cook. And we´d like to taste it with you, on this presentation, where we´ll go through light designing, from preparing ingredients, to tasting the results, in form of short featured light designs accompanied by short choreographies.

Henk van der GeestSince 1973, he worked in Holland Opera. Since that moment he worked up from a regular technician to a designer, only thanks to own practical experiences. In 1981, he travelled, thanks to grant of Ministry of culture to United States, where he tried to gain more knowledge in his profession. He was meeting, and assisted light designers from Broadway in New York, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera and Santa Fe Theatre Festival. After returning to Netherlands, he became the first freelance light designer in the country and worked on many productions at home, and abroad, as well.

He worked as a residential designer for Opere Forum, Intro Dance, and proposed world premiere of Naïma for Holland Opera. With experiences from working in theatre, he achieved success in world of architecture as well. Through exhibitions, he became a museum light specialist. He is also working on multiple interior and exterior designs for hotels, restaurants, business passages…

Few years ago, he stood at the beginning of International Lightdesigners Organization – ILO. It is an initiative, which is to support artistic progress in the field. Young designers may try professional habits in working with light here, and may gain experiences from older colleagues.

Since 2001 he is leading Lighting Design Working Group of the Scenography Commission of international network OISTAT and is the president of OISTAT in the same time.
