Christiana Caro is American photographer, recently on Fulbright Research Fellowship in Slovakia. Here she has created a photography cycle with the topic of Great Rye Island on Danube river, inspired by a book from 1989 found in a local museum. Christiana has researched the Island and its banks with scientific particularity and passion. She has discovered places linking the local culture and nature. Images of the ambience of the Island that has faced political shifts and redrawn of boundaries. Christiana’s view is „from abroad” - casual displacements of time, these works hover between duration, document, and self-portraiture. „Each site weaves history with the ever unfolding present and my work is a non-chronological reflection, based on the thread of personal experience, historic legacy, and institutional mythology. This non-linearity reinforces the subjectivity of recollection and the circularity of time. The images from the book mirrored my own explorations of the site today, with unintentional re-photography - twin images that have occurred across decades.”
