SJ Esau (Uk, Anticon), The Kurws (Pl)
concert / Kofola Sessions
Friday, November 25, 2011, 8pm

SJ EsauSJ Esau employs experimental techniques, lyrical gymnastics and rhythmic prestidigitation to create multi-layered, manic psych-pop compositions. Combining a stunning visual art show with a bizarre blend of sound, rhythm, loops and instruments, S.J. Esau is an incredible live performer. A veteran of the ultra-cool Bristol scene, Esau has played around the world, including Barcelona’s Primavera festival and Brighton’s Great Escape. Esau’s last two albums were released on legendary label, Anticon Records. As a solo-performer, S.J. Esau makes the technical challenge of sounding like an entire band, or even an entire orchestra look easy, whilst creating an immersive, engrossing sound, one that is haunting and amazing. Releasing his acclaimed recordings on labels such as Anticon Records, Static Caravan and Twisted Nerve as well as Esau’s own Enormous Corpse label, SJ, has is a prolific artist under his own name and with projects such as Hesomagari, Jeremy Smoking Jacket and OHRATGI.

A new full length is keenly expected at the end of this year.

The Kurws have formed in May of 2008 as a spontaneous consequence of a ping-pong session, which descended underground and remains there until today. They drew on influences, arising from punkrock as well as rock n’roll tradition, garage/surf, krautrock, rotten funk, no wave or british postpunk scene. The Kurws is punk, afflicted by the postmodernist curse with all of its benefit of inventory, where things are being born out of fusion and deconstruction. From an ambition to remain fresh and organic. At the same time it’s still an ordinary garage band, which brazenly takes the risk of collective improvising without proper musicianship, quietly dismissing the embarrassment of discredit. Fueled by this conviction they perform live, at the same time promoting their debut album called “A hole in the ghetto” (MC/CD/LP/Digital) released on autumn 2011.

Live performance of SJ Esau and The Kurws is the only Slovak stop of their joint Polish tour.
