Keď sa rúbe les4pm If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front Marshall Curry, Sam Cullman / USA / 2011 / 85 minutes / English / Czech subtitles
At the beginning of the 21st century, the term environmental or ecological terrorism became part of the media lexicon. Generally it’s used to describe the actions of radical activists who, in their efforts to protect the environment, overstep acceptable social boundaries. The documentary If a Tree Falls tells the personal story of activist Daniel McGowen. As part of the radical Earth Liberation Front, McGowen participated in arson attacks in many places in the U.S. The film describes the transformation of nonconformist protectors of the environment from demonstration organisers and exponents of passive resistance to active, violent warriors fighting the symbols of environmental devastation. It explores the dilemma one faces in fighting for higher goals, which go beyond the consumer values of today’s world, in a way that is still socially acceptable. The film has been shortlisted for an Oscar in 2012.

Prizmou gréckej krízy4pm The Prism GR2011 - KRISIS - Nikos Katsaounis, Nina Maria Paschalidou / Grécko / 2011 / 62 min. / English and Greek / Slovak subtitles
Greek police shot and killed a 15-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Athens in December 2008. His death unleashed mass protests both in Greece and several other European countries. However, the protracted financial and social crisis was perhaps a deeper reason for unrest. At the beginning of 2010, 14 photographers and cameramen tried to capture the scene from their own perspectives. To track how the general mood and economic circumstances changed in recent years, they conducted interviews in every corner of the country, with elderly, Egyptian refugees, truck drivers, political scientists, historians, and others. The result is a colorful patchwork of opinions whose common denominator is frustration with politics, failing public institutions, debt and destroyed landscapes. At the close of the film, an Athens art professor says the need to create something new always comes from hunger, not a full belly; the crisis is a good thing.

spat-na-tahrir4pm Back to the SquarePetr Lom / Nórsko, Kanada / 2012 / 83 min. / English / Czech subtitles
The joy, pride and sense of community experienced during the revolution in Egypt was replaced by the everyday fight for survival. How did the transformation impact the lives of citizens? Employing the documentary essay form, director Petr Lom considers the character and depth of the revolutionary changes. He interviews not only opponents and supporters of the revolution, but also the bystanders. A guide at the pyramids, a minibus driver who refused to transport the arrested to prison, the wife of a wrongly accused man, a young girl stigmatised in her village for taking part in the uprising, the brother of an imprisoned blogger – all gradually paint a complex and unhappy portrait of post-revolutionary Egypt. The revolution has not managed to overthrow a system of repression rooted in both state organs and interpersonal relationships.

Nedáme sa umlčať6pm Zero SilenceJonny von Wallström, Alexandra Sandels / Sweden / 2011 / 57 min. / Mainly English / Czech subtitles
In 2011, citizens of Arab countries took to the streets to fight for their rights. This film is comprised of several participants’ stories – young people who could no longer remain silent. It starts in Tunisia, where the Arab Spring was ignited by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi, who set himself alight in protest at the regime. Lilia, who took part in the Tunisian demonstrations, recounts bloody clashes with police; it is her belief the revolution began because people no longer were afraid to express themselves. The story of the “Twitter Revolution” in Egypt is told by blogger Wael, photographer Hossam, and journalist Imran, who epitomise the crucial role played by new media. After the protests in Tunisia and Egypt, people also took to the streets in Lebanon. This documentary delivers a comprehensive overview of the uprisings in the three states and shows how the individual protests shared a surprising number of commonalities.

+ Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark - May Ying Welsh / Qatar / 2011 / 51 min. / Mainly English / Czech subtitles
Last year’s protests in Bahrain followed close on the heels of uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. In the same vein as earlier demonstrations, demands included freedom, political participation, and modern citizenship. In early March, a day before the beginning of NATO’s intervention in Libya, they were also the first demonstrations to be suppressed. The Al-Jazeera television station recorded a secret documentary about these protests. The main theme is the accompanying phenomenon of the Arab Spring, the so-called “counter-revolution” and the techniques used to control the population, i.e. giving arms to agents, acts of state terrorism, manipulative media campaigns, and divisively splitting society. On the other hand, doctors who provided assistance without exception testify to the fact that the protests in Bahrain were neither religious nor ethnic in nature.

In Fragile Identity, Slovak director Zuzana Piussi examines her fellow countrymen’s current notions of nationality. She expresses her concern that Slovak national sentiment is rather fragile and liable to political misuse. The protagonists often reject the leading Czech figures of Czechoslovak history and prefer to look for their roots in the common “pre-national“ past of Great Moravia. Although many of the stories are rather tragicomic, the turbulent developments in the EU have shown that the search for one’s own identity is a sensitive matter not only in Slovakia.

Switzerland has a reputation as a stable, prosperous country where citizens make a significant contribution to the running of the whole society. That may be one reason it is a popular destination for refugees and migrants, although local legislation is far from welcoming. Under Swiss law, anyone without a permanent residency permit can be arrested at any time, held for two years and then be expelled and sent back to their country of origin on so-called “special flights.” Award-winning director Fernand Melgar visited a detention centre near Geneva to record, without commentary or explanation, what goes on behind its walls surrounded by high fences.
