Zs (c) Nate DorrOne of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York. The Zs’ songs sputter forth in Morse code dots of percussion and saxophone…
Ben Sisario, New York Times

Zs was founded in 2000 by tenor saxophonist and composer Sam Hillmer. Since the band’s inception Zs has incarnated as everything from a sextet to a duo, most recently featuring Ben Greenberg (electric guitar), Tony Lowe (electric guitar), and Ian Antonio (drum set), in addition to Hillmer’s signature sax ranting. While Zs’ music has been variously categorized as no-wave, noise, post-minimalist, drone, and psych, it is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs aims to create works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time, evoking unspoken past, present, and future rites and ritual. Zs has performed in lofts, galleries, basements, rock clubs, and concert halls across North America and Europe with The Locust, Gang Gang Dance, Animal Collective, Battles, The Dirty Projectors, Dan Deacon, Peter Brötzmann and Han Bennink, and Louis Andriessen. Zs currently records for The Social Registry record label.

As Zs enter their 2nd decade of operation the band is becoming a bit of an institution. Composed of a small community of specialists from fields including punk, jazz, metal, hip-hop, avant-garde classical, and the visual arts, each member is united by Zs’ singular artistic aesthetic. In the days to come, Zs fans will experience these musicians in combination and recombination. Most immanently, look out for the classic trio, Sam HIllmer, Ben Greenberg, and Ian Antonio, joined by erstwhile member Charlie Looker, brutality giant Weasel Walter, and WFMU’s Marty McSorely spinning Zs’ own remixes, chopped and screwed into sheets of noise accompaniment. For those of you whom wish a more fully immersive Zs experience in terms of member’s related projects, please refer to: Hubble, Yarn/Wire, Pygmy Shrews…
